Examples of Skills and Knowledge

In no particular order

Computers

I have been working with computers from a young age but started really working with them starting in 2003 when I was became Lab Tutor. I had the duties of providing help desk support to one of Rogue Community College's campuses. This is where I really learned the ins and outs of troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing computers and printers in a business environment. These skills have been further improved through the ensuing jobs including providing in-home support for people. I have worked on countless types of computers, laptops, inkjet printers, laser printers, phones, PDAs, and now tablets. My abilities with computers extends to even repairing and soldering parts themselves and not just replacing components.

Networking

My knowledge in networking first started with a few classes I had in my associates degree. My position as a Lab Tutor, at the time, did not require or have any duties with the networks. However, my supervisor was a network administrator who loved to teach. His teaching method was interesting as he would send me to fix a problem, answer any questions I had, and leave me to fix it (he would be available to answer questions if I asked). My favorite part of his style was when I would break something. Rather than get angry, he would simply have me fix that again providing support as needed. It was this hands on fixing and re-fixing way of learning that I believe is why I tend to solve problems faster people with many times my experience as I know things backwards and forwards after working on them for a short while. To help, I also took as many extra classes I could adding some 50 credits more then I needed for my associates degree. During this time is where I learned IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, sub netting, Active Directory management, print servers, basic scripting, the importance of proper network layouts, tracking down network faults, etc.

My networking knowledge really expanded when I became a systems technician in 2007. It is also were I have learned the majority of my knowledge about cable infrastructure and low voltage wiring. Two of the primary duties initially were fixing the college’s antiquated video security systems and the access control system. The video system was a mix of analog Bosch DVRs running over coaxial cable, which I learned (there is a difference between CCTV and CATV) to repair and install until 2010 when I started building the digital video system. I have been almost solely tasked with the design, purchase, installation, setup, administration, and repair of the system. Thankfully I have been blessed with help from various electricians through the years who have taught me the proper ways of running and terminating cables for a network. The system runs as a standalone network for the security of the switches and cameras. Here I have learned the importance of selecting the right switches and topography for throughput and designing servers capable of handling at least 400MB/s of video data with 20-40TB storage arrays. It is also were I have learned the basics of VLANs.

Software

If I was forced to choose one thing I excelled at with technology, it would be with software. There is one constant in all my time working with people and technology is that no matter how much something is toughted as the next best thing, it will make your life so much easier, simple to use, easy to learn, there will be no problems.
